Algaecides are the chemicals that are used to kill algae when added to water. For example, copper sulphate, iron salts, rosin amine salts and benzalkonium chloride. Disinfectants kill the unwanted micro-organisms present in the water. There are various different types of disinfectants like chlorine, ozone and hypochlorite.
In order to neutralize acids and basics, sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH), calcium carbonate and lime suspension (Ca(OH)2) are used to increase pH levels. Diluted sulphuric acid (H2SO4) or diluted hydrochloric acid (HCl) declines the pH level of the water. Oxidants are used to remove both organic and oxidisable inorganic components present in the water. Water treatment chemicals that can be oxidized with ozone are absorbable organic halogens, nitrite, iron, manganese, cyanide, pesticides, nitrogen oxides, odorous substances, chlorinated hydrocarbons etc.
