Swimming Pool Chemicals Chemicals that are used for protecting/cleaning the swimming pool are known as swimming pool chemicals. Swimming pool chemicals include various kinds of disinfectants and sanitizers which are used to control the growth of certain algae and bacteria in the pool water. Some of the swimming pool chemicals are chlorine, bromine, acids, calcium hypochlorite, muriatic acid, cyanuric acid etc. These chemicals are corrosive, fire hazard and highly injurious to health. They should be stored carefully, away from any source of heat or spark. The “chlorinating agents” release chlorine when they are dissolved in the water. Chlorine gas may be used in large pools. Copper and mercury-based chemicals should not be used in swimming pools as they are health hazards. Oxidizing materials (like calcium hypochlorite) have the ability to react chemically to produce burnable materials. This reaction is spontaneous at room temperature and at slight heating. Always use separate, clean metal or plastic measuring cups for each swimming pool chemical to transfer or measure chemicals. Protect chemicals from moisture and water. |
