Paper Chemicals

Dyes, inks, bleach, and sizing are the chemicals used in the manufacturing of paper. Papers are usually made of cellulose fibres. Raw materials include wood pulp, rags, and recycled paper. Paper chemicals are harmful to the environment whenever they are released in the water supplies and nearby land after use.

Paper is treated with acids in the pulp mixture and the humidity in the air to prevent rapid deterioration. A layer of mineral pigment is coated on the paper for its best reproduction. The mineral pigment used is generally clay mixed with an adhesive. To prevent the spreading of writing ink a water-resistant substance like rosin is added to the pulp.
