Alcohol is a colorless volatile flammable liquid bearing an ethanol property C2H5OH. Alcohols are usually obtained by fermentation of sugars and starches and these are extensively used, either pure or denatured, as a solvent and in drugs, explosives, cleaning solutions and intoxicating beverages. These are also known as ethanol, ethyl alcohols.
In chemistry an alcohol is usually termed as any organic compound in which a hydroxyl group (-OH) is bound to a carbon atom of an alkyl or substituted alkyl group. The general formula for a simple acyclic alcohol is CnH2n+1OH. The functional group of an alcohol is a hydroxyl group bonded to an spł hybridized carbon. It can therefore be regarded as a derivative of water, with an alkyl group replacing one of the hydrogens.
