Acids basically refers to any of a class of substances whose aqueous solutions are characterized by a sour taste. Acids possesses a unique ability to turn blue litmus red and to react with bases and certain metals to form salts. Generally depicted by the generic formula HA, an acid is a chemical compound which dissolved in water and makes a solution with a pH of <7.0. The word Acid has its origin from a Latin word called “acidus”.
Acidus stands for “sour” which means a substance having a taste or characteristic of that produced by acids; sharp, tart, or tangy. Although the term acid has a precise meaning in chemistry. Acid is a substance that can accept a pair of electrons to form a covalent bond. Acid usually having a pH of less than 7.
